What is Uncommon Minds?
I am really proud to work with Uncommon Minds. They provide neurodivergent children with a safe space to be themselves, be creative and make friends.
I get to be a role model and have the freedom to expand upon my skills as a host, creative and gamer.
Games Master/Host
My main role at Uncommon is to be a Games Master. I design sessions to allow for creativity, freedom and fun. We started through Roblox which required me to vet games beforehand and take into consideration the size of the session.
The kids can interact with us in whatever way they feel comfortable, so occasionally sessions can be a bit quiet. I use my host skills to encourage conversation and help everyone feel comfortable.
Games include - Stardew Valley, Minecraft, Roblox, and Tabletop Simulator.
Social Club
I occasionally assist in running 'Social Club' sessions.
These are very similar to the games ones but are more focused on encouraging conversation and acting as a neurodivergent role model. We do quizzes, ask silly questions and encourage a little thinking at the end on our strengths.
Understanding My Brain
I have also assisted in running 'Understanding My Brain' sessions, these are more focused on teaching the kids about themselves and promoting positive thinking on what can often feel like a weakness. We do mini quizzes, multiple choice questions and encourage conversation.
Film Club/Course
I am scheduled to run a mini film making course for the children. Designed to encourage creativity and teach them how to create their own projects through storyboarding, planning a story, filming etc.
